Scaling Up Partner Treatment for Chlamydia and Gonorrhea in Brazil:
An Integrative Review
Keywords:
Contact tracing, Sexually transmitted diseases, Sexual partners, Chlamydia, GonorrheaAbstract
Objectives: This article aims to analyze the impact of expedited partner therapy (EPT), a treatment approach for partners of patients with curable sexually transmitted infections (STIs) such as chlamydia and gonorrhea, without prior medical examination, and to identify barriers to its implementation in Brazil. Methods: An integrative literature review was conducted in PubMed, SciElo, and Cochrane Library databases in July 2022, including 12 articles divided into two categories: (1) rates of partners treated/notified and (2) rates of persistent/reinfection. Results: EPT showed higher adherence to treatment among infected partners than standard management, with potential to reduce persistent/recurrent infections. Conclusion: EPT is a promising strategy for the control of chlamydia and gonorrhea in Brazil, but studies adapting it to the Brazilian context are needed.
