GUIDANCE FOR POSTPARTUM WOMEN ON NEONATAL CARE: COMPARISON OF THE PRE-PANDEMIC AND PANDEMIC PERIODS

The aim of this study was to compare nursing guidance for postpartum women on neonatal care in the rooming-in system during the pre-pandemic and COVID-19 pandemic periods. This is an analytical and cross-sectional study involving 823 postpartum women in a university
hospital in western Paraná, analyzing medical records from 2017-2018 and 2021-2022. The results indicated that, in both periods, the support and guidance were satisfactory (87% to 99.8%), with improvements in neonatal care, such as bathing (78.4% to 95.7%), umbilical stump hygiene (82% to 96.9%), and breastfeeding (92.6% to 99.3%). Breastfeeding difficulties decreased, with fewer cases of nipple fissures and an increase in milk donation. However, clinical complications in postpartum women increased from 2% to 40.2%. It is concluded that, despite the pandemic, the quality of neonatal care was maintained with good adaptation practices to ensure the safety of postpartum women, newborns, and healthcare professionals.
