PHYSICAL ACTIVITY AS AN ALTERNATIVE TREATMENT FOR CHIKUNGUNYA
Keywords:
Chikugunya fever, Rehabilitation, Physical activityAbstract
The Chikungunya virus (CHIKV), transmitted by the Aedes aegypti mosquito, was initially identified in Bangkok in 1958 and arrived in Brazil in 2014, causing concern due to its long-lasting symptoms, such as fever and intense polyarticular pain. These symptoms can evolve into a chronic stage, causing persistent joint pain and stiffness, affecting the quality of life. The current treatment predominantly relies on non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs). However, recent evidence suggests that non-pharmacological approaches, such as resisted exercises and hydrotherapy, are effective in improving functionality and pain relief in chronic patients. Considering the lack of attention to Chikungunya as a neglected tropical disease, it is essential to emphasize integrated treatments and to develop public policies that incorporate non-pharmacological therapies.
